Have you ever seen this viral plant where people squeeze it and fluff comes out? It is the cattail plant! Today, let me share more interesting facts about this plant.

How did this plant get its name?

The cattail plant was named ‘cattail’ as its elongated and fuzzy seed heads remind us of cat tails, which is how the name came about.

Where do cattail plants live in?

They live in mud flats or in shallow waters, often growing on extensive stands. They live in muddy areas as it helps them to have much more efficient dispersal methods. Tiny seeds of cattails fall into the mud and lodge immediately into the mud, so it will eventually grow there.

Are cattails poisonous?

No, they are not poisonous to humans or animals. However, the barbs on the seeds of thee cattail can be attached to an animal, which can make it injured. There are some edible parts for humans, such as the young shoots, pollen, young flower spikes and roots. However, young cattails may be confused with some plants in the iris family that look alike and are poisonous. Also, it is advised to not eat the fluffy seeds as they may result in choking or pollen in the seeds can cause allergic reactions.

How do cattails benefit the environment?

Firstly, cattails purify the water by absorbing excess nutrients. Secondly, they also offer nesting and shelter to birds. Muskrats, beavers and geese can feed on the roots of the cattail. Like other aquatic plants, cattail also releases oxygen into the water, making the oxygen level increase. During hot periods, cattail plants can provide shelter from the sun, making the water cooler for the animals. Lastly, the roots of the cattail plants help stabilise soil along shorelines, preventing soil erosion.
