All about the Svalbard Reindeer by Keira Lin Ziying
AdultIt’s the festive season! So, let’s dive into a creature that can be related to Christmas, which is the Svalbard Reindeer! You may have heard of this species of reindeer before, but you may not know some interesting fun facts about it.
Did you know…
1. Svalbard Reindeers are the smallest species of reindeeers!
Their genes has information to make them have dwarfism, which is the tendency for animals to shrink over time!
2. They can shed their antlers!
Like other species of reindeers, both male and female reindeers can shed their antlers! The males mainly shed theirs around November and December, while females keep theirs throughout winter!
3.Svalbarb reindeers have the most insulated fur!
The hairs on their body are hollow and have air inside, which provides excellent insulation! Using the scientific knowledge that air is a poor conductor of heat, so the air in their hair trap heat for them to keep warm!
4. Svalbarb reindeers lifespan!
The average lifespan of a Svalbarb reindeer is around 10 years. The longest lifespan of a Svalbarb Reindeer is 17 years!
Now that we have covered special things about the Svalbarb Reindeer, let’s talk about its natural habitat!
The Svalbarb Reindeer is endemic to Svalbarb, which means that they are regularly found there, which also suggests their name! They often graze the tundra of greens for food in their habitat for survival. They stay in the most non-glacial areas of the Archipelago as it supports their need of vegetation for food. There is also less competition for vegetation there, so it is easier for them to survive.
Let’s also cover how reindeers are related to Christmas!
This is widely known! Reindeers were known as Santa’s sleigh pullers to help him reach different houses to deliver everyone presents in time! The most famous reindeer featured (also featured in a song) is Rudolph, who has a shiny reed nose! While many may simply now him for his red nose, it also features the symbol of hope and acceptance. Of course, also a symbol that Christmas is coming soon!
So, merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
