Week 4: De Brazza’s monkey!

 Did you know about this species of monkeys?

Today, we will dive into some fun facts about De Brazza’s monkey! Some of which you may not know!

1. They are the largest guenons!

Guenons are medium sized monkeys that are endemic to sub-Saharan Africa! 

2. They are named after someone!

The De Brazza’s monkey was named after the De Brazza’s family. According to Google’s Gemini,  Pierre Savorgnun De Brazza contributed scientific and general literature attributes. Jacques Savorgnun De Brazza however, is the one who discovered and collected specimens of the monkey. Thus, some people say that the monkeys were named after Pierre while others say that the monkeys were named after Jacques.

3. The De Brazza’s monkey has cheek pouches!

Thee cheek pouches store food to carry away to somewhere safe to eat. The check pouches are located inside the mouth between the jaw and the cheek.

4. The dietary habits of the De Brazza’s monkey!

These monkeys are omnivores, meaning they rely on both plants and animals for food! They have the structural adaptation of sharp teeth, which they use to pierce through their food, making it easier to eat!

5. Lifespan of a De Brazza’s monkey!
They can live up to 22 years in the wild. If they are in captivity, they can live up to 30 years! This is longer than any animal i have done a post about so far!

6.  Characteristics of this monkey species!

They can be recognised from their white muzzle and beard. They also have an orange crescent on its forehead and white stripes on its thigh. Another common name is ‘Ayatollah monkey’, which comes from a man with a white beard, the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini!

So, are they endangered?

No! The status of the De Brazza’s monkey is least concerned on the IUCN Red list, which is the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species!
