Week 5 (last week of December 2025): The star-nosed mole!

All about the star-nosed mole! By Keira Lin Ziying

Did you know these facts about this interesting animal? If no, let me tell you some fun facts!

1. The star-nosed mole is the fastest eater!

The moles snout has 22 tentacles that make it ultra sensitive. It also hunts and grabs its prey. In water, it blows bubbles using its nose onto leaves. Then, it sniffs the air in the bubble to locate its prey!

2. It is blind!

They have small tiny eyes that function poorly so it is like it’s blind. However, it can use its snout to locate prey so it can still survive! Besides, they live in dark, wet environments, so whether they can see or not doesn’t really matter.

3. It is key in its environment!

The star-nosed mole aerates the soil and can control the insect population, which benefits the ecosystem and makes it much healthier.

4. They are well equipped to swim!

The star-nosed mole has large feet for digging the soil and act as paddles swimming! It also had a water resistant coat to keep it warm!

5. They live mainly in Eastern North America

They live from southeastern Manitoba to Labrador and Nova Scotia!

6. What is their ranking?

According to Chatgpt, they are listed under least concerned on the IUCN list. (Check what IUCN stands for from week 4’s blog!)

7. Lifespan of the star-nosed mole is 3-4 years!

Sadly, this cute creature survives for 3-4 years in the wild.

So, should we keep this creature?

Personally, i feel we should not. These creatures have specific demands for dietary and other reasons. If one demand is not fulfilled, the star-nosed mole may die.

Some tv shows featuring the star-nosed mole

I personally remembered myself watching a Doraemon (round and blue Japanese character) video where Nobita and his friends find the star-nosed mole in a book under rare animals around the world and they decided to keep some rare animals in Suneo’s house. However, they did not take proper care of the animals, thus some escaped.
