🐚All about the Spoon-billed Sandpiper! By Keira Lin Ziying☆
Have you heard of this kind of animal before? If no, stay tuned to find out more!
Where did this bird originate from?🎧
This bird’s specimen was first discovered in India during the 1840s, a very long time ago! It can be confusing as other sites state that they breed in Northeastern Russia.
IUCN list type: Critically endangered😢
It is said that this bird is critically endangered and only has less than 500 birds left.
Why did the population of this bird decrease so drastically?↓
The primary reasons are due to hunting, habitat destruction and many more human-related reasons. However, researchers are keeping this species alive by hatching eggs and leading juveniles into the wild to let them learn how to survive. This increases this species’s population, so scientists are trying to use this method on other endangered animals too (such as the California Condor, Aldabra Giant Tortoises and more)
Fun facts about this animal!🦢
1) This animal also changes its feathers colours during different seasons to camouflage and hide from predators! For example, during breeding season, their head and body turn reddish brown. However during winter, their body turns back to brownish grey. Many other animals possess this ‘special ability’, such as wolves.❄
2)Their diet consists of marine vertebrates , insects and moss!
3) Long travelling distances for these birds are tough as 10000km when they migrate from Russia to South east Asia during winter! Imagine flying that far!
Writer’s opinion:♢
Seriously i think this bird is very cute! However, it is definitely sad to hear that they are affected negatively by human activities! I hope the scientists’ plan to hatch eggs and release the juveniles will work out great so we can see this bird more commonly and see nature in its home. However, if they ever come back i do hope that no one else will try to do illegal things that cause their population to decrease once again. I really hope that i get to see it in person!
